Why People Buy?
Yasser Khan | Why People Buy?
Copywriting is all about keeping in view the buyers’ buying motives and subconsciously keep hitting on those buttons that elicit a buying response from them. All these are legitimate reasons their minds make up to buy, and the real trick is in uncovering the psychology. Not just any, but subconscious psychology.
My friend Dwayne Huggins over at betternetworker.com compiled 30 real reasons why people buy anything. Geoff Ayling originally researched buyer motives in his book, “Rapid Response Advertising”, and explained just 50 of the countless reasons people buy something. Pretty powerful stuff, if you want to include these in your copywriting or sales letters, or for whatever marketing you do.
Note there is nothing inherently conscious about buying. ALL buying is done subconsciously, and some psychologists even go so far to say, unconsciously. Bearing this single fact in mind will help you a long way.
The following list is meant to be self explanatory. Here goes the list:
- Make money
- Save money
- Save time
- Get more comfort
- Get more cleanliness/order/organisation
- Get healthier
- Escape physical pain
- Gain praise
- Be popular
- Attract the opposite sex
- Conserve possessions
- Have possessions
- Have safety
- Increase enjoyment
- Satisfy curiosity
- Satisfy appetite
- Protect family
- Protect reputation
- Be in style
- Make work easier
- Avoid effort
- Avoid trouble
- Avoid criticism
- Emulate others
- Be individual/unique
- Take advantage of oppotunities
- Feel younger
- Feel opulent
- Gain influence
- Gain beauty

Note: It is best to apply a maximum of 3 to 4 of these buying factors in your marketing and copywriting. This is because, at most, only a few of these are a deciding factor in the purchase at any given time.
